With this solemnity we end the liturgical time of Christmas. Now we will start the ordinary time for a short time, to start the time of Lent.
Many think that Jesus was baptized in Jordan, to set an example of how to baptize people. Mainly Christians of non-Catholic denomination, present this text to argue that the baptism of children is not valid. If we read the text carefully, we will find the answers that clarify why Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River.
In verse 31 it says: "I have seen the Holy Ghost come down from heaven like a dove, and rest upon it. I still didn't know who he was; But he who sent me to baptize with water said unto me, He whom you see upon whom you see that the Holy Ghost comes down and rests, is the one who baptizes with the Holy Ghost. I have already seen him and I am a witness that he is the son of God." Christ was baptized to be recognized by John the Baptist as the Messiah, the Son of God.
First, Jesus Christ never left the order to baptize people when they were the same age as him. Second, there are biblical texts reporting that they baptized entire families, where the children of families were supposed to be very young and there were even small children. We see this in the book of Acts of the Apostles. Acts 2.41; 10, 48; 16 33.
Returning to the intention of Jesus' baptism, have we already recognized him as the son of God? The people who recognized him were able to follow him, contemplate his glory and majesty in the Blessed Sacrament of the altar, longing to be with him in the Eucharistic celebration, by meditating on his divine word in the Holy Scriptures, by experiencing his grace, his mercy and his loving forgiveness in the sacraments.
The invitation is to recognize the Lord, live and learn from him, apply his teachings, and teach others to do the same experience so that together we can build a more just world, where everyone recognizes Jesus Christ, as the one Lord, whom we must worship and worship guard their teachings.
El Bautismo del Señor
Con esta solemnidad terminamos el tiempo litúrgico de la Navidad. Ahora iniciaremos el tiempo ordinario por un breve tiempo, para dar inicio al tiempo de Cuaresma.
Muchos piensan que Jesús se bautizó en el Jordán, para dar el ejemplo de cómo bautizar a las personas. Principalmente los cristianos de denominación no católica, presentan este texto para argumentar que el bautismo de los niños no tiene validez. Si leemos cuidadosamente el texto, nos encontraremos con las respuestas que nos aclaran por qué Jesús se bautizó en el río Jordán.
En el versículo 31 dice: “He visto al Espíritu Santo bajar del cielo como una paloma, y reposar sobre él. Yo todavía no sabía quién era; pero el que me envió a bautizar con agua, me dijo: Aquel sobre quien veas que el Espíritu Santo baja y reposa, es el que bautiza con Espíritu Santo. Yo ya lo he visto y yo soy testigo de que es el hijo de Dios”. Cristo se bautizó para que juan el Bautista lo reconociera como el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios.
En primer lugar, Jesucristo nunca dejó la orden de bautizar a las personas cuando tuvieran la misma edad que él. En segundo lugar, existen textos bíblicos donde reportan que bautizaban familias completas, en donde se supone que los hijos de las familias eran muy jóvenes e incluso había niños. Esto lo vemos en el libro de Hechos de los apóstoles. Hch 2,41; 10, 48; 16 33.
Regresando a la intensión del bautismo de Jesús ¿Nosotros ya lo hemos reconocido como el hijo de Dios? Las personas que lo reconocieron fueron capaces de seguirlo, contemplado su gloria y majestad en el Santísimo Sacramento del altar, ansiando estar con él en la celebración eucarística, al meditar su palabra divina en las Sagradas Escrituras, al experimentar su gracia, su misericordia y su perdón amoroso en los sacramentos.
La invitación es reconocer al Señor, vivir y aprender de él, poner en práctica sus enseñanzas y enseñar a los demás a hacer la misma experiencia para que juntos construyamos un mundo más justo, donde todos reconozcan a Jesucristo, como el único Señor, a quien debemos adorar y custodiar sus enseñanzas.
